[ 66th consult | video / action at hall of the missing ]

[For those watching via the Network, you've currently got a view of the Hall of the Missing provided by a device left sitting, unattended, on a shed suit jacket that's placed on one of the benches. The owner of these items is visible, off by the wall.

Of course, it's not unusual to stop by the Hall of the Missing - assuming you have reason to suspect someone you know has just left. Wilson doesn't have any such excuse; he's on his lunch break and, not particularly hungry, he's popped across the street to spend some quiet time among the portraits. He stops in here now and again, with increasing frequency since he passed the two year mark of his return to the City in July.

He strolls slowly and silently along the wall, inevitably pausing for a few moments when he happens across a familiar face. It's been a long time. Not as long as some, of course; he knows that perfectly well. Still, a long time, and he's reached a point of resignation as he reflects back on it.

He stops his path by Cuddy's portrait, then turns away and finds is way back to the bench where the device rests, sitting next to it. He takes a slow and quiet intake of breath and looks around him once more. No words are spoken, for he doesn't know he has anyone to say them to.]

[ It's still transmitting when he glances toward the device after Arthur speaks- ]

[ And he reaches a hand over to switch it to audio. ]

[ It seems he's asking most people this but all the better to gauge averages. ]

You could say that. A little over two years, since my most recent arrival.

[ He pauses slightly, the next bit an elaboration; ]

I got some time off between stays.

What are you doing?

At this particular moment? Sitting. I do that sometimes.

Where is this incredible phenomenon happening?

You know where it's happening. The entire network does.

Then it won't be creepy if I'm right behind you.

[It isn't right in fact he's still a distance away because you know, walking. On foot. With a cane. Yes. He is going to bother you in person, Wilson. Is your body ready?]

Why no, of course not. Why would anyone find that creepy?

[Well, it's certainly not a surprising prospect. He knows you're not here yet, and he's still staying put. Think of how far away he could be by the time you got there if he started running, but he's not. Because he's just a good friend like that.]

True. Especially when someone's hanging around a proverbial graveyard. But I can't help but notice no roses or teddy bears.

[Closer, closer now. Good thing Wilson isn't the running type or else this would end far uglier than he intended. Everything ends up to be more rough than it should with House. He ponders about the nature of this behavior. There must be symptoms, you see.]

I think "graveyard" might be a bit intense for it. It's the best the City has to offer as far as any kind of chronicle... and the only lasting impression anyone lucky enough to wind up here leaves behind.

[Lingering around, he's gotten up and is now walking in slow, aimless steps as he talks on the device. There really isn't any sense in running, anyway, if he intends on going home. No real way to avoid the roughness.]

Memorial for the departed. You're going to tell me that goldfish go away to some farm next.

[That one strikes a sour note to his own tongue but there it is. No, the people there aren't dead. Not all of them at least. That's the word around. Finally House is there.]

So this is your hang out.

[Hi, House. He's standing there, posture relaxed, arms crossed and the device loosely in a hand as he arches a brow at your arrival.]

Yes, my graveyard. It's a compromise; I thought about going full goth, but I thought if I took it too far it might scare the patients.

[Hi, Wilson. Blue eyes are studying you. Crossed arms are usually defensive.]

More so than usual.

[A shrug before he seeks out a place to take a seat.]

It's quiet. I guess that's one of the perks right?

[Deflection can't help with that impression. He gives a distinctly unamused smirk at the comment, taking slow, loose steps to follow House at a reasonable distance.]

One of the primary ones, actually.

You're not being bothered or else this wouldn't be on the network. And I would have know where you were already.

[The assessment of the situation continues although House has had a few ideas jumbling around. Admitting that he has over looked something also agitates him.]

So it is something else. Am I getting warmer?

[Lack of communication on Wilson's part in a blatant way....is something different. He's sneaker than that.]

[He takes a deliberate, punctuated breath, running a hand along his jaw as he does so.]

Well... you're right, there isn't anyone or anything that's actively bothering me. It's just...

[There he pauses, pursing his lips and making a loose gesture with both arms that lands somewhere between shrugging and throwing his hands up.]

It's this place. Everything that's happened the past couple of years. How little it matters.

You know, I don't think purposefully putting yourself in depressing situations is actually considered healthy.

[He gives a near-silent laugh at that.]

I'm not sure what it says that I don't find this all that depressing.

Are you looking for anyone in particular?

No. It's... probably a bit strange, but I'm just thinking back on the last couple of years.

It's not strange. Maybe a strange place to do it, but at the same time it's oddly appropriate, too. It kind of makes you wonder why some people never stick and why some people are just stuck.

It just somehow like it's putting the time passed in more meaningful terms, looking at the people you've seen come and go. I do wonder what the difference was that got their portraits up here.

That's what I meant by depressing. You can talk about nostalgia and fond memories all you want, but at the end of the day, the people who are gone are still gone. Most people just... don't go looking for reminders.

It can also be comforting, in a way. There's so much in the City that's fleeting and even more that's just surreal, I think... it's nice to be reminded of who we've known here. Even if they are gone.

At least someone takes comfort in it.

I'm sorry. I know this is the sort of thing that's different for everyone.

Why are you sorry?

Well, if you find the Hall depressing, I'm sorry that the device decided to broadcast it.

It's not your fault that the Network is as big of a pain as the deities who maintain it. And I wasn't really... I just thought it was a little weird to see someone take comfort from a place like that. There's nothing wrong with it if you do, though.

Well, take it as an expression of regret, then, if I can't apologize since it wasn't deliberate.

And... well, I certainly realize that it's unusual. I just... I suppose I can't think of any better chronicle that the City has to offer.

You could keep a diary.

I know that's kind of girlie.

House would probably find it and pick the lock.

Though I suppose the Network itself isn't entirely dissimilar.
